MEET THE TEAM: DR HELEN BEAR, SENIOR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

I’ve recently joined Liopa as Senior Research and Development Engineer.

My background is in lip reading and understanding visual speech signals. I’ve spent the last year at Queen Mary University of London conducting research into “Integrating sound and context recognition for acoustic scene analysis”.  I looked at how to make lip reading more robust and helpful so it’s a workable solution in real world conditions where speech recognition won’t necessarily work well (e.g., where it’s impacted negatively by lighting conditions, background noise, etc.).

Previous to this I was a visiting Professor at the Technical University Munich. I was the module organiser and principal lecturer of a module ‘Visual speech processing’. So, it’s a change and a challenge – albeit great ones – to be bringing my research and academic experience to life at Liopa! It’s wonderful to see what a positive and genuine impact Liopa’s technology can have on people’s lives. For example, SRAVI enabling people in critical care environments to communicate effectively. I’m looking forward to building out the technology further.

In my spare time I practice Tae Kwon Do. I’ve only started this year and I love it as a sport in itself but also for the under pinning philosophies (Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control, Indomitable spirit. It’s also refreshing not being the teacher, and being in the position of the student!
