Liopa is delighted to announce that our Senior Machine Learning Scientist, Dr. Alex Cowan, has been named IT Woman of the Year at the Belfast Telegraph Awards.
As Senior Machine Learning Scientist, and one of Liopa’s very first employees, Alex’s contribution to the company cannot be understated. Her hands-on role in developing AI-based applications has touched every one of Liopa’s solutions and offerings. Alex’s work is pushing boundaries, at the forefront of technological innovation in the fields of AI and Computer Vision.
Alex was instrumental to Liopa becoming incorporated in 2015. She was our first full-time employee, having worked with us through a KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) with Queens University Belfast. During her KTP project, Alex brought advanced technical skills with deep neural networks – and her appointment was critical when we were founding the company. Alex’s measurable success includes her foundational understanding of neural networks, and her hands-on building of our first AI-based visual speech recognition platform. This platform is the underlying technology upon which our SRAVI lipreading application is based.
Fabian Campbell-West, Liopa’s CTO, said: “We are extremely proud of Alex for winning the IT Woman of the Year Award. It was a great evening celebrating Northern Ireland’s strong technical capability in a global market. Alex is a role model to anyone in the field of AI, and this award was richly-deserved. She’s a key member of our team, and we’re excited about what’s next!
Alex gave a Q&A interview that describes her role at Liopa – and the full text can be found here.
Well done, Alex!
