Automated lipreading vendor Liopa extends contract with DASA

  • Liopa enters Phase 2 of the project, to continue researching Visual Speech Recognition technology
  • This contract extension is part of the DASA competition to help UK Defence and Security develop capability in ‘Behavioural Analytics’
  • Keyword spotting in surveillance video can assist law enforcement agencies to make better use of footage such as CCTV

10 DECEMBER 2020 – BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND – Liopa has been selected to take part in Phase 2 of the DASA Behavioural Analytics initiative, which is looking for scientific and technological solutions that can provide context-specific insights into the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of individual, group and population behaviour, enabling predictions about how they are likely to act in the future.

Liopa’s Visual Speech Recognition (VSR) technology can decipher speech from analysis of lip movements without needing audio. This technology can be applied towards keyword spotting in video footage. The existing VSR engine takes, as input, video of a subject(s) speaking, and uses AI to predict the subject’s most likely utterances. Liopa’s technology can be used to identify key words spoken in surveillance video content (e.g. CCTV) where audio is either not present or of poor quality.

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) finds and funds exploitable innovation to support UK defence and security quickly and effectively, and support UK prosperity. Their vision is for the UK to maintain its strategic advantage over its adversaries through the most innovative defence and security capabilities in the world. DASA is a cross-Government organisation, launched in December 2016 by the Secretary of State for Defence.

Keyword spotting could allow defence and security agencies to:

  • Better utilise CCTV footage – which is often silent – for surveillance and crime prevention
  • Support deterrence effects capabilities across defence and security domains
  • Decipher what a person of interest is saying
  • Analyse large quantities of footage for utterances of high-risk words

DASA Delivery Manager, Eleanor Humphrey, said, “Behavioural Analytics is a fascinating and emerging capability that is finding innovative ways to keep our people safe from major threats. We are delighted to be working with Liopa to accelerate their technology and look forward to seeing the results.”

Liam McQuillan, Founder and CEO, Liopa, said, “This contract allows us to build on the progress made in the Phase 1 project. It’s great validation of our VSR technology in a practical use case that will provide invaluable information for Defence & Security personnel.”
